Sawyer, Homer D.

Rev. Homer D. Sawyer, 84, of Christiansburg, died Thursday, December 15, 2011, at Lewis Gale Hospital, Montgomery. He was born in Independence, Va., March 1, 1927, to the late Henry Harrison and Carrie Horn Sawyer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Aileen Sawyer. He was the founding minister of the Bible Holiness Church, Christiansburg, which began June 1958 and retired after over 44 years. Rev. Sawyer began one of the first Christian schools in the state of Virginia. He was a veteran of the Korean War having served in the United States Army. He is survived by his daughter, Linda Belcher, of Christiansburg; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tim and Trina Sawyer, of Greensboro, N.C., Mark and Angie Sawyer, of Christiansburg; five grandsons; three granddaughters; 12 great-grandchildren; special caregiver, Rebekah Hall; sister, Louise Wimmer, of Salem; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Talmadge Sawyer, of Buckingham, Joe and Lois Sawyer, of Indianapolis, Lloyd and Ruth Sawyer, of Roanoke. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, December 18, 2011, in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Joe Sawyer officiating. Interment will follow in the Sunset Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Christiansburg Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 176, Christiansburg, VA 24073. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday evening at the Mccoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive SW, Blacksburg.
