Smith, Dorothy Morehead

smith_dorothy_moreheadDorothy Morehead Smith, 89, of Fairlawn, passed away suddenly on Sunday, October 30, 2011. For the past year of her life, she was a resident of Heritage Hall in Blacksburg. The oldest of three children, she was born in Montgomery County on December 1, 1921, to the late Giles E. and Allie D. Morehead. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sidney Howard Smith; their only child, Carol Sue Smith; and a brother, William E. Morehead. She is survived by a sister, Bernice M. Johnston, of Blacksburg. Dorothy also leaves behind three sisters- in-law, Edith Jamison, of Rocky Mount, Fleta (Russell) Dowdy, of Christiansburg, and Margaret Smith, of Radford; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A member of Fairlawn Baptist Church since 1955, Dorothy served on several teams throughout the years. Most recently she was the team leader for the greeters, a ministry that she enjoyed fulfilling. Dorothy had a passion for gardening and definitely had a green thumb for African violets. She loved to quilt, crochet and work with her hands. The family would like to thank the staff, nurses and volunteers at Heritage Hall, along with her close neighbors, friends and church family for their care and many kindnesses extended to Dorothy. Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, November 2, 2011, at the Fairlawn Baptist Church conducted by Pastor Danny Collins and Pastor John Hopkins. Burial will follow in Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
