Sumner, Arnold Clifford (Cliff)
Arnold Clifford (Cliff) Sumner, 86, of 980 Sylvan Drive, Pulaski, died on Wednesday, June 29, 2011. He was born in Carroll County, the only child of Joseph Arnold and Roxie Dean Sumner. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Venice M. (Suzie) Sumner; and his wife of 57 years, Alene Hancock Sumner. Cliff and Alene moved to Pulaski in 1944 where he was first employed by First Federal Savings Bank. He rose through the ranks to become President of that organization until its merger with Charter Federal Savings Bank of Bristol, Va. He retired as Senior Vice President of Charter Federal with a combined service of 45 years. He was active in various community and civic groups during his business career, including 16 years as a member of the Pulaski County School Board. He was educated in the public schools of Carroll County, Elon College of North Carolina, and LaSalle Extension University, Chicago. Both Cliff and Alene were members of First Christian Church, Pulaski. He is survived by two sons, Randall C. and Elizabeth B. Sumner, of Pulaski, and David H. Sumner and Vanessa Blaylock, Knoxville, Tenn.; grandson, Dr. Christopher C. and Laura Sumner, of Rocky Mount; and great-grandsons, Josh and Luke. Funeral Services will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 1, 2011, from Stevens Funeral Chapel, Pulaski. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 2, 2011, in Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin. The family requests that memorials be made to the charity of choice.
