Sassaman, Bertha I.

Bertha I. Sassaman, centenarian at age 103, a resident of Christiansburg, Va., since 1989 and formerly of Nazareth, Pa., passed away on Saturday, June 4, 2011, at home. She will be deeply missed. She was born on April 20, 1908, in Bushkill Township, Pa. She was a daughter of the late George “Francis” and Ellen Root Seibold. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, J. Lester Sassaman; brother, Stewart; sisters, Annie Werner and Ida Flory; niece, Mary Werner Jones; and nephews, Robert and Ernest Flory. Bertha was a devoted life member of St. Luke’s United Church of Christ of Belfast, Pa., where she worked diligently in many activities and remained interested and involved over the years. She is survived by her beloved nieces and nephews, Ellen Bennett Vest and Thelma Lucas, of Christiansburg, Va., Allen Flory and wife, Pauline, John Flory and wife, Joan, all of Pen Argyl, Pa., Arlene Fehnel and husband, Harley, of Palmer Township, Pa., Karen Scott and husband, Gary, of Hellertown, Pa., and Robert Seibold and wife, Gale, of Morristown, N.J.; great-nieces and great-nephews and numerous and valued friends. Special thanks to Carole Akers, Millie Warden, Sheri Boydton and Amedisys Hospice for their loving care. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 13, 2011, in St. Luke’s U.C.C., 471 Belfast Road, Nazareth (Belfast), with Pastor Darlene Blocker officiating. Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation on Monday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of service, in the church. Interment will follow in Belfast Cemetery. A Memorial Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 28, 2011, at Park United Methodist Church with Pastor J. Michael Sanborn officiating.
