Atkins, Grover Woodrow

Grover Woodrow Atkins, age 95, of Blacksburg died, Sunday, May 1, 2011, at Kroontje Health Care Center. He was born in Endicott, Franklin County, Va. on October 5, 1915 to the late James R. and Nannie Trail Atkins.

He was preceded in death by his first wife of 55 years, Mildred Simms Atkins and second wife of 13 years Virginia Yopp Price Atkins. Also preceded in death by six brothers, Mont, Charlie Lee, James, Joe and Bobby Atkins, Moyer Brogan; sister, Mildred “Midge” A. Hollandsworth.

He was a W.W.II Veteran serving in the Pacific. He worked for Radford Brothers Grocery Store and Service Station in Blacksburg for 40 Years beginning in 1947. He was a member of Slusser Chapel Church of God and the Mt. Tabor Ruritan Club.

He is survived by his two sisters and brother-in-law, Minnie A. Radford, of Blacksburg, Olivia A. and Hubert Quinn, of Ferrum, Va.; special niece, Billie R. and Robert Cline, of Blacksburg, stepdaughter and son-in-law, Virginia Dare and Paige Bishop, of Hartfield, Va.; stepson and daughter-in-law Thomas Edward and Mary Price, of Wake Forrest, NC; three step-grandchildren; special friends, Bob and Nell Ross, and family, of Blacksburg; numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff of Kroontje Health Care Center at Warm Hearth for their loving care during the past three years.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at 2:00 pm in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Richard Gilbert and Rev. Rador Vaden officiating. Interment will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Maple Grove Methodist Church Building Fund, Ferrum, Va. 24088 or the Mt. Tabor Ruritan Club, 214 Price St., Blacksburg, Va. 24060. The family will receive friends from 12:30pm until service time on Wednesday at McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive Sw, Blacksburg.
