Freer Sr., Harry C.

Harry C. Freer Sr., Master Sergeant, United States Army (Ret.), 91, of Christiansburg, Va., went to be with his Lord on Thursday, February 17, 2011. He was predeceased by a daughter, Edna Carol. Surviving are his wife of 69 years, Velma F. Freer; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Henry Pittard, of Blacksburg, and Joann and Larry Overholser, of Shreveport, La.; two sons, Harry C. Freer Jr. and Alene Danby, of Blacksburg, and David Randall Freer, of Pfafftown, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; and 17 greatgrandchildren. Harry was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He retired after 30 years of service in February 1967, 13 of those years were with the Army ROTC at Virginia Tech. He went on to serve with Civil Defiance in Jackson, Miss., for three years before moving to Florida and working with the St. Petersburg Fire Department for seven years. He graduated from St. Petersburg Junior College with an Associate in Science in Business Administration and Management. He accepted the Lord on April 22, 1973, moving to Mason, Ga., to work with the Source of Light Missions. Harry and Velma moved to Jacksonville, N.C., to help in the care of her parents. In 2004, they moved to Christiansburg to be near their children in their golden years. He was a member of Cambria Baptist Church. He was a loving husband and a wonderful father and grandfather, not only to his grandchildren, but also his great-nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held 2 p.m. on Monday, February 21, 2011, in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Thomas Harvey officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Christiansburg. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday evening, February 20, 2011, at McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive, Blacksburg, Va., 540-552-3211.
