Sutphin, Pearl Downs

Pearl Downs Sutphin, 88, of Roanoke, Va., and formerly of Pulaski, Va., went to be with the Lord early Sunday morning, December 26, 2010. She was born in Max Creek, Va., on April 7, 1922, and was the daughter of the late Edward Calvin Downs and Donnie Calsie Quesenberry Downs. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Earl Sutphin; and by a son, Edward Earl Sutphin.

Pearl was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Pulaski and served as Den Mother of Troop 249. She was secretary to Judge T.S. Dalton; a secretary for The Pulaski County Republican Committee; a secretary and past president of the Pulaski County Republican Women’s Club; a secretary of The Virginia Federation of Republican Women; and secretary for Sen. John Warner when he opened an office in Marion, Va.

Surviving are daughter, Arrietta S. Jones, of Roanoke; son and daughter-in-law, Jimmie A. and Monika W. Sutphin, of Dewitt, Va.; grandchildren and spouses, Neal Jones, Vincent Jones, Rachel J. Mitchell, Dona J. and Alan Lawson, and Jimmie A. and Keri Sutphin II; seven great-grandchildren including, Kayla Lawson, who lived with Pearl; and two great great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 29, 2010, from the Stevens Funeral Chapel with Pastor Emily Hoyer officiating. Burial will be in the Quesenberry Family Cemetery, Max Creek. Visiting will be held on Wednesday at Stevens Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the service hour.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, 120 Wall St., 19th Floor, New York City, N.Y. 10005 or to the American Cancer Society , P.O. Box 554, Roanoke, Va. 24013.
