Robert ‘Bob’ Atmar Smith III, 82 of Christiansburg, passed away Friday, September 28, 2018. He joined the Navy Reserves in 1953, active service starting in 1954. He retired after 22 years of service. He also worked at T.I. in Dallas Texas and spent 7 years at Kollmorgan in Radford, Va. He was an active member of Moose, VFW, American Legion, River View Church and volunteered at Lewis Gale Hospital. With a smile and twinkle in his eyes, always positive and willing to assist his fellow man.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Catherine and Robert A. Smith II; spouse, Suzanne Mills Smith; her parents, Alice and Harold Mills, Jr.

Robert is survived by his loving wife, Carol Sue Wheeling Smith; 6 children, Elizabeth A. Penland (Thomas, Jr.), Deborah L. DeFalco (David), Robert A. Smith IV (Jean), Laura ‘Kim’ Stellrecht (Carl), Julia M. Wheeler and David E. Smith (Teresa); 1 step son, Dr. John D. Lowman (Elizabeth); 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Bob’s positive energy was contagious, he had LOVE for everyone who came in contact with him and lived life to its fullness each day. Flowers are appreciated, although Memorials in Bob’s name may be made to the VFW Wounded. The family will receive friends Friday, October 5, 2018 from 10 to 11:00 am at Horne Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will imminently follow at 11:00 am in the Horne Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Shawn Wilburn officiating. Interment will follow at the Old Dublin Cemetery. The family would like to thank Medi Hospice, especially Marcia Harrison, RN and Julia Crouse.
