Shortly after his birth, the family moved to the Sinking Creek Valley in Craig County, Va., where he attended Maywood school. He served in the United States Army Air Corp, in the South Pacific until 1945. In 1948 Carl returned to work at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant, where he continued working until his retirement in 1986. He enjoyed attending Wesleyan Community Church in Blacksburg, Va., where he often sang and played his favorite instruments, the auto harp and the guitar. He also enjoyed writing songs and poems. He loved people, staying active, and a good joke, even if it was on himself.
