Hunter, John Henry
John Henry Hunter, 87, of Blacksburg, Va., died May 27, 2010. He was born January 2, 1923, son of John Edward and Sarah Elizabeth Evans Hunter in Campbell County. He was preceded in death by three brothers, three sisters, and three nephews, Thomas Benjamin Hunter, Edward William Hunter, Howlett Bailey Hunter, Margaret Virginia Hunter, Mary Elizabeth Hunter and Nancy Barger Hunter Trent and nephews, Thomas Benjamin Hunter Jr., Fredrick William Hanes Hunter and David Luther Hunter. Also preceded in death by a foster son, Reginal Gillispie. He is survived by his sister, Annie Mae Hunter Tweedy, of Hampton, Va.; and sister-in-law, Virginia Harvey Hunter, of Concord, Va.; nieces, Laura Trent Roberts, Sarah Trent Driskill, Carol Hunter Driskill, Anne Tweedy Emerson, Evelyn Hunter Honeycutt, Linda Hunter Day, Missy Hunter Snell; nephews, Edward Trent, Samuel Trent, John Tweedy, Charles Tweedy, William Hunter, Howlett Hunter, John Hunter, Frank Hunter. Dr. Hunter received his PHD in Civil Engineering from the University of Colorado, Graduate of University of Virginia, Masters of Science from Harvard University, attended Columbia University, and the University of Illinois. Taught at Clemson University in the school of Engineering and joined the faculty at Virginia Tech 1960. Served as a Ensign in the Navy in Okinawa and Guam during World War II. He was a member of the State Water Conservation in the 1970’s. Dr. Hunter also traveled extensively in the United States and Canada. A memorial service will be held at the McCoy Funeral Home at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 29, 2010, followed by a burial service at Early’s Chapel in Concord, Va. at 4 p.m. The family wishes to thank the folks at Warm Hearth and two wonderful caregivers, Zack and Bucky, for their continued support and care during Dr. Hunter’s illness.
