martin_marvin_eugeneMarvin Eugene Martin, 91, of Pembroke, Va., passed from this life on Thursday morning, January 28, 2010, in the loving care of his family at home. Born in Giles County on July 22, 1918, he was a son of the late Marcellus and Pearl Smith Martin. “Gene” was a devout and active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, New River Ward, Pembroke where he fulfilled many callings in the church. He was sealed with his wife in the Washington, D.C., LDS Temple on July 29, 1978. “Gene” was a master carpenter and craftsman both at the Celanese Celco Plant and with Martin Brothers Construction Company (which he and his brother Ross operated) and many projects he did for friends. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, World War II. He was preceded in death by his parents; his twin sons, Barry Martin and Gary Martin; his brothers, Harold Martin and Alma Martin; and his sister, Alberta M. Williams. He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife and caregiver of 50 years, Ellen Miller Martin; his son and daughter-in-law, Vaughn “Bill” and Jill Sexton, of West Point, Va.; his brother, his best friend, and business partner, Ross E. Martin and his wife, Gladys, of Pembroke; his seven grandchildren; his 12 greatgrandchildren; his beloved nieces and nephews; and a host of friends and his church family at New River Ward. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 31, 2010, in The New River Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Pembroke with Bishop Gary Scott, Presiding. Entombment will follow in Birchlawn Abbey in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday evening, January 30, 2010, from 6 to 8 p.m. Veterans Graveside Services will be performed by American Legion Posts #311 in Pembroke, #68 in Narrows, #145 in Peterstown, and VFW Post #6000 in Narrows.
