lucas_donald_watkinsDonald Watkins Lucas, 79, of Blacksburg, died Sunday, January 17, 2010 at Heritage Hall Health Care Center. He was born in Blacksburg, Va. on December 12, 1930 to the late Hatcher Watkins and Betty Price Lucas. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Haven Ray Lucas and Danny Hatcher Lucas. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served in the U.S. Air Force. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 30 years. He was a member of Gateway Baptist Church and later attended Slusser’s Chapel Church of God. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Betty Newman Lucas; four daughters and sons-in-law, Pamela and Tim Cummings, of Athens, Ga., Cindy and Don Knautz, Teresa and Carl Compton, all of Christiansburg, Dee and Tommy Waugh, of Huntsville, Ala.; son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Sharon Lucas, of Cheshire, Conn.; eleven grandchildren, Cayla and husband, Zack, Cassidy, Cyle, Carla and husband, Darius, Cimber, Tara, Chelsy, Caleb, Levi, Joshua, and Cloey; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Katherine Reynolds, of Bland, Va., Bonnie and Jimmy Albert, Shirley and Gene Reiva, Joyce Robinson, all of Blacksburg, Sherry and Allan Burke, of Christiansburg; and a sister-in-law, Shirley Ray Schoeman. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at 11 a.m. in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dewey O. Weaver, Jr. and the Rev. Richard Gilbert officiating. Flowers will be appreciated or memorial contributions may be made to the Dayspring Christian Academy, P.O. Drawer 909, Blacksburg, VA 24063-0909.
