Young, Ann “Pauline” Saunders

Ann “Pauline” Saunders Young, 87, a resident of Elliston, was peacefully called to join her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, April 11, 2017. Pauline, a native of Willis, Va. was the seventh of eleven children born to the late James Avle Saunders and Ollie Mae Saunders on October 7, 1929. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Woodrow Saunders, Mabel Lester, Fendell Saunders, Houston Saunders, Gladys Saunders, Oscar Saunders, and Marie Wallace. Pauline was a lifelong homemaker dedicated to her family. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Elliston. Pauline served on the program, missions and kitchen committees for decades. She was fondly known as the church’s mother since she and her husband were the oldest couple in church. Pauline’s adult hobbies included puzzles, crossword, picture and word and quilting, an art she learned from her maternal grandmother and mother. Many were disappointed when arthritis forced her to discontinue making her beautiful quilts. Pauline’s favorite book was the Holy Bible and she thoroughly enjoyed Bible study and Sunday School at the Richfield Joseph C. Thomas Center. Rejoicing in her life are Joseph, her devoted husband of more than 60 years; a daughter, Viveca (David) Ware, of Mitchellville, Md.; a son, Donnovan (Melissa) Young, of Algonquin, Ill.; grandsons, David Ware, Jr., of Chantilly, Va., Douglas Ware, of Dallas, Texas, Dexter Ware, of Columbia, Md., Donnovan Young II and Derrick Young, both of Algonquin, Ill.; three great-grandchildren, Julian, Quentin and Leila, all of Aldie, Vd.; two brothers, Eugene (Susie) Saunders, of Bassett, Vd. and James (Lucille) Saunders, of Willis, Vd.; a sister, Viola Claxton, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a sister-in-law, Augustine Saunders, of Willis, Va.; a special cousin, Agnes Dobbins, of Blacksburg, Va.; many dear nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. The family expresses its special appreciation for the loving care, friendship and commitment of nieces, Faye Perkins and Ruth Banks; caregivers, Vanessa Lee, Tabatha Teal and other staff members at the Richfield Joseph C. Thomas Center, as well as the dedication of Dr. David Delaplane and Nurse Marla. Pauline made an indelible impression on all who knew her. To know her was to love her. She will be truly missed and her legacy will be carried on by her children and grandchildren. A celebratory homegoing service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 15, 2017, at First Baptist Church of Elliston, 4860 Calloway Street, Elliston, VA 24087. The visitation will commence at 1 p.m. followed by the service. Pastor Paul Lee Andrews, Sr., officiating and the Rev. Vivian T. Simmons, Eulogist. Interment in the church cemetery.
