Bower, Dorsey Junior

Dorsey Junior Bower, of Blacksburg, born: February 28, 1913 and died June 29, 2006, in Lewis-Gale Hospital.

He married Esther Ann Chafin on April 28th 1934. Mr. Bower entered the military service December 22, 1943. He trained and served as a rifle squad leader in World War II during operation against the enemy in France, Belgium, and Luxembourg in Germany. He was discharged as a Staff Sergeant, with honors on November 10, 1945. Mr. Bower worked as a carpenter in the days when you built the house from the ground up. The only thing he did not normally do was lay brick. He also was a part-time farmer. He loved his 32 acres and the cows he kept. If you have ever heard the saying “hard work never hurt anyone”, he was living proof.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther Chafin Bower; brother, Charles Ronceverte Bower; brother, James Marvin Bower; and sister, Reva Bower Grimes.

Mr. Bower is survived by one brother and one sister; Paul Tabor Bower and Ruth Bower Ellis; son, Paul Hayden Bower; daughter, Susan Elaine Bower; son and daughter-in-law, Jimmie Dorsey and Martha N. Bower; grandchildren, Toni Bower Helms, Kevin Ray Bower, Michael Paul Bower; great grandchildren, Malorie Kay Bower, Levi Dylan Bower, Zachary Dakota Helms, Taylor Lynn Helms, and Torri Alexis Bower.

The family will receive friends from from 6:00-8-00 pm Saturday, July 1 at Horne Funeral Service. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 2 in the Horne Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Josh Kilbourne officiating. Interment will follow in St. Matthew Cemetery, Floyd. The Bower family is being served by Horne Funeral Service, Christiansburg, VA. (382-2612).
